He detects that the magic power the illusion draws upon to maintain itself has somehow been diminished to almost nothing. Around the perimeter of the grounds are a series of stone markers about 4' tall with domed tops, engraved with writing and magic symbols. Trace figures out that the illusion is powered through these markers, and the vines that have grown up and around them are interfering with the magic. Those who have heard of Danilon from their history lessons recall that he was an archmage, infamous for his great ambition to create and control an empire. Discovering a Venettian portal in Danilon's manor explains his rumored ability to move quickly over great distances.

Chalker checks the aura of halfling-sized being. It is not a person, but some sort of sophisticated construct. "What's your name?" "I'm the guardian. I have been here since Danilon put me here. Take those orcs with you and go." "Would it surprise you if Danilon's dead?" The guardian replies grimly, "That won't stop him."

Trace says, "We're just trying to figure out why a horde of orcs is looking for this place." "The outer defenses must have failed," responds the guardian. Suddenly it says "Oh my" and leaves.

Chalker uses his power over metal to unlock the front door. "Everyone inside," he orders. Rory runs on in, followed by Nancy the donkey.
