Background

Introduction
Josef of Riversbend is a well-traveled former soldier and warrior-mage. He is tall, thin and prefers to veil himself in secrecy about his own past, primarily due to regrets and what he sees as his many failings.

Childhood
Josef was born the younger son of the Blacksmith in the village of Riversbend in CE 0000. From a young age his intelligence was noted by the local wizard, who accepted him as an apprentice. While he was naturally talented in magery, the first of his failing soon became evident. From an early age he has been fascinated, mesmerized by watching fire. He learned to make it, control it and sculpt it. He spend hours playing with the fire he created until one day he accidentally burned down his master’s library. In a moment of sheer panic over what he had done, he fled Riversbend and began his life on the road.

Travels
Following his flight from Riversbend, and scared of his former master’s anger, Josef fled as far away as possible, far into the Orient. His magical skills as well as his native intelligence and dexterity kept him alive throughout the journey, but he arrived far from home where he did not speak the local language and had no way to take care of himself.

Living in the countryside and occasionally on the street, he was taken pity on by a group of warrior-monks. Under their care he quickly learned the language, as well as learned their arts of Judo, Karate and fighting with a staff. With the fear of his former master still strong, he hid his magical skills from the monks. After a few years, when the day came that he must decide to enter their order or be put out, he willingly left the temple tired of their quite lifestyle and wishing for an exciting life. After leaving the temple, Josef ended up enlisting in the local military where he learned the use of weapons and armor. He found he liked both the “off-duty” lifestyle of his comrades, drinking and carousing, and the sense of duty and honor he felt in helping his friends and comrades

Code of Honor

He attempts to follow a code of honor based on a mixture of the Bushido Code and the Chivalric Code

I. Rectitude or Justice

Rectitude is one’s power to decide upon a course of conduct in accordance with
reason, without wavering; to die when to die is right, to strike when to strike is right.
       - To protect the weak and defenseless
       - To give succor to widows and orphans

II. Courage

Courage is doing what is right.
       - To eschew unfairness, meanness and deceit

III. Benevolence or Mercy

A human invested with the power to command and the power to kill is expected to
demonstrate equally extraordinary powers of benevolence and mercy: Love, magnanimity,
affection for others, sympathy and pity, are traits of Benevolence, the highest
       attribute of the human soul.

IV. Politeness

Politeness should be the expression of a benevolent regard for the feelings of others.
        - To refrain from the wanton giving of offence

V. Honesty and Sincerity

        - At all times to speak the truth

VI. Honor

        - To live by honor and for glory
        - To fight for the welfare of all
        - Never to refuse a challenge from an equal
        - Never to turn the back upon a foe

VII. Loyalty

        - To obey those placed in authority
        - To keep faith

VIII. Character and Self-Control

        - To persevere to the end in any enterprise begun
