[This is a transcription from my notes, nearly a year and a half after the actual gameplay. Items in square brackets are things brought back to my memory by the notes; thus, they are inaccurate/incomplete. MaryK]

September 28, 2003, 2:30am – Kef is in the piney woods of East Texas. She dreams… Outdoor café, somewhere sunny. Three people:

• One fair with dark hair, he seems familiar, evil
• Woman, beautiful, dark shades, large black hat, unnaturally pale, different vibes than anyone, conflicted but not evil, blood-red lipstick
• Pale thin blond man, “feels” old, aura has elements like Paula’s, tortured soul, good most of the time
• Fourth presence, felt but unseen – evil

Near future. Quiet lunch. Woman and dark-haired man seem to be a couple. The woman seems to know Kef is there; she looks her direction and smiles as if she’s been waiting for her. Woman doesn’t show teeth when she smiles

Paula gets on the computer and does research. Someone looks like young Greg Brady. Paula phones Steve around 1:00pm. Rogue analogue of an IS agent – murderer. Name is Kevin McGuire. Enigma gave Paula a magical artifact to counteract this world’s low mana. Look for gang members dying in trunks. Memphis – 20 gang members found dead in one trunk yesterday (9/27).

Paula calls Blake; Steve phones Kef. Steve feels a chill, like someone just walked over his grave. Paula detects residual magic.

Paula says Enigma visited her at 9:30am. Cynthia Jones grew a clone of Kev McGuire from stolen DNA & braintape. McGuire killed her and her group. He can travel to different worlds.

Memphis – George Lewis killed – resembles photo in dossier. Was a librarian, age 35, shot with M16 from long range (300-400 yards) coming out of a Luby’s.

Memphis – Sarah Carter, nurse, found dead, drained of blood. Harold Dean, x-ray technician, found dead, sword wound, skin gray and like paper. Name sounds familiar to Steve

Kef shows the others her drawing of the three people in the café.

9pm: Paula sees Steve light up with magic – Seeker. Kef calls Jeremy to get the plane ready. Blake obtains 20 wooden bolts for Paula’s crossbow.

11:30pm: Begin flight to Memphis. One gang member survived, and owes Blake a favor.

1:30am: We land in Memphis. Steve is “touched” again – colder. Hospital; man in traction describes attack by a man with a silver bat, laughing and repeating the words “Where is Mister Wicket?” Jesse played dead and survived being stuffed in a trunk.

4:00 am: Leave hospital Kef dreams – tall pale man, long black sword in hand. Sword has emotions, hunger. It was the 4th presence in her vision. Sword bears arcane designs and symbols that Kef doesn’t recognize. Dark, streets and buildings. Grim expression, “work to do.” Behind Kef she hears a panicked male voice from ground level, “No, don’t do it! What do you want?” Screaming. A sound coming from the sword, a whisper or murmur, wordless vocalization of hunger. Kef turns, sees victim crawling away backward, gets a good look at his face. He stops, seems to levitate past Kef. She wakes to a scream, “splack” and sucking sound. Pale man is sad. Sword is feeding. Victim is “slipping away.”

7:00am: Paula and Steve (made up as Greg Brady) go to another hotel

7:30am: The next Seeker comes, brighter and colder. Paula deduces it is finding Steve and pulling things from his mind, like names. Cast by a mage 1 ½ times stronger than Paula.

11:00am: Jeremy tunes in CNN. Kansas City, MO – 15 gang members found in trunk, dead. Frank James dead of severe blood loss. Jeremy calls Paula; “We’re in the wrong town.” “Frank James” was an alias Steve once used in Kansas City. Next stop could be Chicago, Dallas, or Miami. In Chicago, Steve was “Jason Smith” six years ago. Willie Burton, shot long-range with M16 in KC; looks like Greg Brady.

Blake arrives. Harold was 35 and looks 85. Jeremy phones a celebrity impersonator company and orders up some Greg Bradys to meet them at Midway [airport in Chicago]. Jason Smith is the victim in Kef’s dream.

Kef dozes on the plane: Looking through a high-powered scope. Sees herself, Paula, Jeremy, Blake, Steve (as Jason Smith). Steve seems “fuzzy.” Daylight, around 4pm, walking around airplanes, cars, taxis, Hertz, Avis

Steve gets touched again, just before we land at Midway. Paula casts Keen Eyes on Steve and Jeremy. Jeremy pulls the plane into a hangar. A limo arrives; Kef senses danger. Paula casts 3-point Drunkenness on driver. Steve, Blake, and Jeremy hear a “siren song.” Steve and Blake begin weaving as if drunk.

A figure drops down from the top of the hangar, hovering in midair. Shoots at Paula who Blinks. [Paula had armed herself with an M16 and demonstrated she was familiar with using it… much to Kef’s shock.]

Steve fires; should have hit, no effect. Man gives Steve a mean look. Steve runs for cover. Kef tries Telereceive; bounces. Steve throws a flash-bang, startles driver. Limo accellerates toward Paula – Blink.

[The fight went on for several rounds. Nothing seemed to affect McGuire. Kef was inside the plane until Paula was injured, then Kef came down the steps and dragged Paula into the plane. Eventually Kev McGuire flies away. We later learn that the three Greg Brady impersonators have been bloodily slain inside the terminal.]

Paula has a dazer (from Enigma). Paula’s ring has Blink and Dispel Magic as well as +5 to spellcasting (presumably). [It didn’t occur to Paula to try the dazer or Dispel Magic on McGuire; Kef starts to upbraid her for this lapse, then bites her tongue and sits silently on the plane, brooding.]

We are airborne, heading toward Dallas (maybe).

[October 25, 2003]

Paula gives the dazer to Steve. We decide to fly to Milwaukee and drive back to Chicago. Blake rents a Cadillac Escalade.

7:45pm: Steve phones the guy; he says Kev offered him a lot of money. Supposed to Murphy’s Pub. Steve offers to go in his place (Disguise by 10). Practices [shooting the dazer] on a wino at 20 yards.

8:30pm: Blake outside in car. Jeremy, Paula, Kef inside. Jeremy sees a guy in jeans, t-shirt, jacket, dark hair, back to the wall. Gets a table three or four over. Paula, disguised (by Steve), strikes up a conversation with a man, five tables away where she can see Kevin. Kef gets a glass of red wine, then goes over to the jukebox.

Steve enters, goes to the bar, orders a beer. Feels a tap on his shoulder, nobody there. Kev beckons to him. “Elric sends his greetings.” Steve’s arms are pinned.

A lady walks by Kef – dark hair, very fair, humming a familiar tune, makes a beeline to Kev’s table. Kef tries to run into her, “hits” and falls down. Woman moves on.

Paula slides into a chair next to Kevin, calls him “Andrew.”

The woman helps Kef up, smiles, says “Not right now.” Kef asks “Who are you?” and she says “That’s not important” and “I’m going to save your friend.”

Kevin says “I killed three people today. I broke their necks.”

Paula gets up to leave, is forced to sit down, flails around and tries to cast Drunkenness, but Kevin is magic-resistant. Kevin says, “Shh, or I’ll do your mouth.” To Steve, “You and I need to talk later. It’s too late for Jason.” The woman says, “Kevin, we should go now. You were a great distraction.” She whispers to Kev (while trying to cast Sleep on Steve).

Jeremy calls Blake. “They’re getting ready to leave.”

The woman tells Paula to cast Aura; “You know you want to.” She is an alien named Sabella.

Sabella and Kev leave, Steve floating after them. Sabella whispers to Kev, and Steve floats back to the table. Kef rushes to the table and starts frisking Steve, who raises his head and winks. Kef urges him to go after them, but by then they have flown off.

10pm: Go to a bookstore, get every book Jason Smith wrote.

Midnight: Back to the plane. Kef tries Psychometry; no one approached the plane.

3am: Steve feels that little “ping” again.

Land at Love Field. Steve figures the next target is someone both he and Jason knew. Blake suggests we all go to his house. [Kef falls asleep, has a replay of Jason Smith’s death; hears the scream “Willie Burton – the name is Willie Burton.”] Kef leaps off the sofa and bursts into Steve’s room [to be met by an instantly-awake Steve aiming the business end of a very large gun at her. Kef apologetically stammers out her information, then backs carefully out of the room.]

10:30am: Steve finds a record of Willie Burton, but he’s been missing for seven years. Mid-level crook, drugs, guns. Was about to move into the big time. Blake’s contact indicates he’s in a federal witness protection program.

Steve did not get pinged at 7:30am. Steve and Paula leave so Steve can make his report.

CNN: Jason Smith found dead of sword wound. 30 gang members found dead in a trunk.

Steve practices with the dazer on squirrels and grackles.

6:30pm: Steve feels a ping, but Paula perceives it’s a different source.

A hole appears in Blake’s living room. Blake, Paula, and Jeremy are stunned. Sabella steps out, carrying a pudgy white man. Steve dazes her but she shrugs it off. Next comes a humanoid in black and gold armor, black sword at his side, carrying Elric/Erlic. Steve tries dazing the armored man, then fires .45. Armored man swings sword, hits Steve’s arm. Sabella grabs the sword and pulls it of Steve’s arm. Sabella heals Steve’s arm; refers to him as “victim”. Steve recognizes the guy as Michael Moorcock, who Steve supposedly killed ten years ago.

They are Eternal Champions. Swords are evil, but the champions do good things. Armored man is Krom. Sword has found a new master – Kev McGuire. Sabella is from Mars; there are only two like her. Kev is wearing a ring with Missile Shield on it.

10:00am: Steve is pinged – but it’s not Kev. “He’s coming.”

1:30pm: We set up.

1:45pm: Dimensional door opens; Krom and Sabella step out.

1:59pm: 200 yards up, dimension door opens and Kev steps out, grinning. Drifts down in front of Krom. Paula casts Dispel Magic; Steve dazes Kev. Blake and Jeremy open fire, blow his leg off. Steve shoots him in the brain. Sabella heals Krom. Blake arrives with Erlic, who picks up the sword and stabs Kev, mutters “No soul.”

We return to Blake’s. Moorcock is awake. He’s in Dallas for a book signing.

Steve has Kev’s ring, but it’s no longer magic.
