NIGHT WATCHES

Lara Lee took the first watch, and it proved to be uneventful. The second watch was by Darr. This watch was uneventful except that at the midpoint a young girl approached him. She successfully cast a loyalty spell on Darr, and told him to be loyal to the doll the girl was carrying and the other two children. She then let Darr conclude his watch. Milo took the next watch, which passed uneventfully. Tanisha stood the next two with no problems. Brodie then pulled the next one. At the end of his watch, Brodie went outside and found a pile of dead bodies at the rear of the hotel. Two of them were of the six volunteers. He came back in and started a search. The little boy woke up Darr, and when he came down with Darr, Milo asked the kid why he'd woken Darr up. The boy said it was because it looked like they needed him. Darr took a protective stance in front of the boy. The house search continued. Darr and the boy were upstairs. Tanisha and Siobhan were in the dining room. Lara Lee, Tormac, Milo, and Petrocelli were in the lobby. All of a sudden, Brodie called for help.

Brodie had entered the servants' day room off of the kitchen when something dropped onto his back, doing some type of damage to him because he felt intense pain. Brodie jerked the thing off of his back and flung it across the room. He swung a sword at it but missed. It stretched its arm out across the room and touched him again. Brodie went down but not before he managed to call for help. Tanisha and Milo got into the room only a second later.

Milo at once began to administer first aid to Brodie. He found no sign of physical injury to him, but with the help of Siobhan and Tanisha he was able to begin bringing him back. While all this was going on Darr and the little boy came down the stairs to the ground floor. Lara Lee and Tormac saw Darr and the boy stop at the bottom of the stairs. The boy said to Darr, "Let's go outside and play." Darr told him that it was too dangerous and that they would get hurt, so they had to stay inside. The boy told him that he was no fun, then playfully kicked him in the shin before turning and running for the back door. Darr yelled out over the net for someone to stop the kids from going out the back door. Milo rushed to block the way while Darr pursued. Darr lost ground when he tried to vault the dining room table. When Milo got into the kitchen, the other girl was standing in the open door. The small girl was also running toward the exit. The boy dodged around Milo and he then tried to slam the door, but a jump rope entangled him, preventing him from succeeding. The other girl then left the doorway when the other two passed her. Darr then started to pass, yelling for Milo to follow him to get the kids. Milo started to cut the rope, but quit when the rope straightened out and tried to leave. When Darr saw that the rope was 'delaying' Milo, he reached down and cut it in two, at which time it became unanimated. Milo still refused to follow, and tried to make Darr realize the kids were part of the problem. Darr could not understand, and tried to get someone to venture out with him. Siobhan and Lara Lee both declined. Darr lingered at the door, and even advanced about five yards beyond the back door. However, when Siobhan shut the door, Darr returned to it and knocked, at which Siobhan let him back in. Darr continued his argument to go after the children. By the time this heated discussion was over, Brodie had been brought almost back to normal but Tanisha was left totally exhausted. Darr went over to a corner to sulk, while Milo decided to get the amulet down and destroy it. Lara Lee levitated up and got it down. Her spell was so successful she also lifted up Tormac. Once she gave it to Milo, he very carefully took it outside and placed it on one of the gunpowder traps in the middle of the street. Next he backed away and set off the trap. Afterward he could find no trace of the amulet.

Brodie placated Darr by saying that they would check out the warehouse and might find the kids there. The team rested and gathered strength for the next move. Finally at about 9:00 am they harnessed the horse to the carriage and headed out to Wharf Street. They were about two-thirds there when they ran into a horde of rats.

Lara Lee was driving from the back, with Darr beside her. Tanisha was on top. Roberto, Tormac, and Siobhan were inside, with Milo and Brodie hanging off of each side. Lara Lee sped up the carriage. Off to the right were a group of five men, one of them Alistair Stone, fighting off the rats. Brodie leaped from the carriage to the building. Milo jumped off the carriage to the street, landing on some rats and taking some damage. Tanisha levitated up and fell behind. Darr let a burst loose at the rats around the men. In front of the carriage were two large dogs, with the little girl on top riding one of them. As the carriage approached, the dogs inhaled and breathed fire out at the carriage, catching the horse and carriage squarely. Lara Lee, Siobhan, Roberto, and Darr all bailed out, but Tormac tried to hunker down and ride it out because of his hurt leg. The horse was killed and the carriage started to come to a stop.

Milo shot one dog (the one without the girl) with his stunner to no effect, so he pumped three more shots into it, finally bringing it down. Before Darr jumped, he'd let loose a second round of shots. After he landed and saw that the girl had slid off the top of the dog, Darr put one shot from the M-16 into the dog's chest, knocking it backwards. Tanisha had started a fire wall behind them to get rid of the rats. Roberto and Lara Lee headed to where the carriage should end up, while Siobhan found a bench to climb up on. Brodie got to the corner of the building and began to nock an arrow when he saw another dog approach and the boy was on its back. The girl headed over to also get on. Darr put another slug into the dog, finally bringing it down. Milo continued to finish the dogs off as Darr put a burst of eight into the rats attacking the men. Darr started running toward the men around the gaslight as he ejected his spent clip and reloaded a new one. Tanisha had broken up the majority of the rats, so Darr then changed directions toward Milo. Meanwhile, the carriage had come to a stop so Roberto pulled Tormac from the burning carriage after putting the fire on him out. Lara Lee did a quick minor healing to keep him alive. Siobhan arrived a second later to do a major, major healing to pull him back close to normal.

When the dog with the two children aboard passed under him, Brodie did a leaping attack, wounding the dog with his sword, which he had drawn as he leaped from the building. The kids got out of the way as the dog attacked. When the dog knocked Brodie down, he threw it using judo. Brodie finally cut it in two as the kids fled. A second later the alley burst into flames, and Brodie leaped to safety and began pursuing the kids. As the kids came into Darr's view he yelled for them to stop but they didn't, so he pumped three shots into the dog that was starting to get up, and ran on after the kids. Brodie followed. Tanisha finished off the rats as Roberto headed off after the two. Milo and Siobhan finished up on Tormac and began helping the five men. One was dead and the other four were in poor shape.

The kids kept in front of Darr and Brodie but the two were slowly gaining. Darr was just behind them when the kids slammed into the warehouse they had been in before. Brodie, sensing a trap, yelled for Darr to stop. Darr heeded the warning, but went a full yard into the building before stopping. The doll landed on Darr's back, doing him considerable damage. Luckily Brodie was close enough behind to grab the doll and slam it against the door frame. Darr heard something coming at him across the warehouse. Just then Roberto arrived at the door just behind Brodie. A bat floating in the air swung at him but missed. Darr then fired a full-auto burst at the approaching sound, missing completely. But he did hear a scream. Darr let the burst push him backwards into Brodie to get him out of the warehouse. As this was going on, the metal hoop which was coming struck Darr in his leg, cutting him. This worked since Roberto had moved out of the way to try and catch the bat. Brodie, wildly swinging the doll, ran for the dockside, while Roberto struck at and missed the bat, which swung at him, missed, and buried itself in the wall. Roberto then grabbed it. Darr moved back a few paces and back to the left of the door, aiming his rifle at where he thought the hoop would come through. When it did, a few seconds later, Darr hit it, blowing it apart.

Brodie plopped the doll down on a pier piling and began trying to cut it in two but was not successful. But he did imbed it into the piling. Roberto approached and used the bat to beat on the doll. Finally Brodie got in a cut that caused something to crack. A boat hook had risen from the dock and was almost at Brodie when he turned, saw it, and dodged out of its way. Roberto just then managed to break the bat. The boat hook continued to follow Brodie.

Meanwhile, Tanisha had arrived at the warehouse. Darr heard her coming and said he was glad she was there. Then just before she got there, Darr passed out. Since he was out of the way of the door and not in any apparent danger, she went on in to investigate the warehouse. She still had her levitate spell on, so she floated upward. Her investigation discovered the little boy cradling a severely-wounded little girl. She saw another girl lying on top of a bale. Brodie turned and broke the boat hook. Roberto, thinking the thing was in the warehouse, came to the door and wished everyone was gone so he could throw the grenade. Everyone, including the kids, vanished, to reappear at the site of the rat battle. Roberto threw the grenade and headed back to the group. Tanisha immediately started back to the warehouse.

Milo quickly did first aid on Darr, helping him a little. Then Milo moved on to help the wounded girl. Siobhan then performed a healing on Darr, bringing him back up to near normal health. They then broke into a shop and situated the rest of the group. After that, the ones who could still move (Milo, Darr, Brodie, and Roberto) went after Tanisha to help her.

While they were doing that, Tanisha arrived back at the warehouse, went in, and examined the girl closer. She was very dead, with her insides ripped out. Finding nothing else of interest in the building, Tanisha came out and headed to the other warehouse down the way. This was the one Brodie had seen the light at earlier. Once Tanisha got near, she floated up to the open window. Inside she saw a man moving about some odd-looking machines, with a dog like those from the earlier fight standing around.

Just after Tanisha reached the window, the other party members reached the front of the same warehouse. The front wide doors were open, with a horse in the room. Milo headed into the room and barely dodged as the horse kicked out at him. Roberto immediately put a full M-16 blast into the horse, putting it down. They went in and began looking for the door leading back. They finally found it (Milo did, that is), but it took all four of them to move the crates from in front of it.

While this was going on, the dog spotted Tanisha while she was trying to open the window. She took a couple of shots at it, but there seemed to be no effect as the dog breathed fire at her. Tanisha went upward to try and avoid the blast and almost made it, but the bottom of her dress caught fire. Just then, a green tentacle made a grab for her, but only got the burning dress as Tanisha went over the top of the building.

When they got the door open, they smelled gas. This gave Milo an idea. They called Tanisha and made sure she was clear. Brodie went around into an alley, and the other three headed into a building across the street and hunkered down. Milo then fired in through the warehouse's open doors, setting off the explosion. Once the explosion ended, Darr, Milo, and Roberto headed into the street, and Tanisha and Brodie closed from the side. A large green creature the size of a small house was coming at them from underneath what used to be a warehouse. Darr gave Roberto his grenade, and Roberto pulled the pin and put the grenade in the center of the creature. Before anyone could get off a shot, green tentacles shot out and grabbed Darr, Milo, and Brodie. Roberto dodged, and Tanisha was levitating so it missed her. She hit it with a fireball, causing it to release Milo. Roberto put a burst into it. Brodie sliced off the tentacle holding him, and Darr sliced off the tentacle holding him with a full burst from his M-16. Roberto put another burst into it as Brodie sliced again and Darr fired. A tentacle grabbed Milo's head and squeezed just before the creature was pulled out of this reality. Darr wasn't hurt any more. Tanisha immediately reached Milo and found no sign of life. Very upset, she used her wish from Enigma by wishing that Milo had survived the last attack. Just after she said that, they were all back in Hawaii at a hospital. Tanisha, who was beside Darr, said that Milo was dead. Darr said maybe she was wrong. Then, supporting each other, they went looking to find out. They found out Milo was in surgery and in bad shape, but that he would live. They then allowed the doctors to take care of them. They had survived another mission.
