The crew had departed Newberry SC, on their way clear across the country to San Bernardino CA supposedly for R&R, when Rick said there was an urgent message to pull over at the next rest stop. Rick brings up a video on his laptop of the director claimed that some agents had been "lost" resulting in severe loose ends. Therefore he was ordering Vicente, Rick, and Marcus (the Carbone Team) to go to Chicago while Valerie, Jack, and Father Martin (the Vaughn Team) were to head for Memphis. As Valerie exclaimed in protest at splitting up the crew, the video was replaced by a talking image of the director. The director admitted that "one or two" agents had died, but refused to divulge any other details.
Somehow the director had placed in the Land Rover two tracking devices; the Vaughn Team was to intercept a motorcycle gang called the Dire Wolves and capture or neutralize all ten armed and dangerous members. The Dire Wolves were "fleeing across grids" to an unknown destination, but the director somehow knew that the team would catch up with them near Memphis.
With Valerie on the hypercycle and Jack driving the Land Rover with Father Martin riding shotgun, they caught up with the Dire Wolves heading south on I-55. Valerie pretended to flirt with the leader, and when she pulled into a gas station the entire gang followed. A few minutes later a shootout ensued, during which Father Martin was shot in the shoulder and the biker gang leader flipped the Land Rover onto its side using only one hand. Even after he was gunned down, the leader crawled onto his overturned bike and bled all over it. Two of the bikers started to ride away from the gas station; Valerie shot one of them, and a bloody mass flew out of the dying leader's body and attached itself to the front of the other. Simultaneously, Jack experienced a tangible wave of fear/hate/terror and Father Martin felt the very ground was tainted.
One of the bikers told Father Martin and Jack that their gang was "meeting a lodge master at the Eastpoint Cafe" to give him an artifact they'd found.
Several people came out of the gas station to help set the Land Rover back upright. One of them was a truck driver who introduced himself as Rusty Murphy and kept asking cryptic questions such as "The Wheel turns?" and "Are you Brethren or Builders?" The missing artifact, he said, is a map/pathway/link to the Overroad.
Valerie chases bloody mass at top speed for over three hours, even though the bike seemed to shimmer and vanish before her eyes, and she passed at least two accidents where innocent drivers had had their hearts torn out.
Eventually everyone arrived at the Eastpoint Cafe, a diner near Starkville MS. While the place at first seemed "normal", everyone in the diner, from the waitress to the kitchen help, belonged to the secret lodge. The lodge master, a large man armed with an assault rifle and clad in body armor, exerted some sort of mental control over the others. After a major shootout, all the lodge members were dead or injured, and the lodge master's head had been shot off.
