Chalker's Conversation with Lt. Otto
Chalker saw the soldier staring at him, and Chalker recognized him. The soldier was Baron Graham’s second son Otto. Otto is a large mean and sort of intelligent man. He and Chalker grew up together, and the Baron and his family hated Chalker.
Otto walked over to Chalker and said “Chalker Jackson my old friend can we talk?” Chalker gets up from the table and he and Otto walk a short distance from the table.
Chalker: Otto, how have you been?
Otto: Well, since you did you tour with the army, I have move up to lieutenant grade. But enough about me, you are the talk of the kingdom.
Chalker: How so?
Otto: That elf came to the court with a letter from you to the King (Trexa) asking for troops and the King sent us. That is a lot of power wielded by a mere courier, don’t you think?
Chalker: I think my involvement is overblown.
Otto: You see there is a rumor going around that you status in the court is underplayed.
Chalker: Who would start such a rumor? (Chalker knows that if a rumor was started was started by Otto’s father the Baron. Baron Graham is an information broker. He finds secrets and uses them to his advantage.)
Otto: Well, it’s hard to say, but are you underplaying your status in the court?
Chalker: What do you mean?
Otto: Remember when we were in school and we had to learn the order of succession to the throne.
Chalker: Yes, I remember.
Otto: Right now there are 100 males in line to be king. I am not one of the 100 because my father is a baron, but since your father is a Duke (Carlson) you are in that 100. Do you remember your ranking?
Chalker: Yes, I think am twenty-seventh on the list.
Otto: That put you one spot behind you brother the Duke (Renheard). I was present when a conversation between my father (Baron Graham) and your step-father (Earl Herto) that recently discussed this matter. Your step-father was not pleased that in his household were four people that were higher in the line of succession than he. Your brother Duke Renheard, Kilroy, you, and his son by your mother (Lady Clarity daughter of Duke Belford) Luda are all in front of the Earl. It really chaps his hide. My father and I are not in the line so we are not as put out as your father. At number twenty-seven, you are really not a threat to the throne.
Chalker: I agree that I am not a factor in the succession game.
Otto: Just before you left the court on this adventure, someone notice that you look like the royal family.
Chalker: What do you mean?
Otto: Someone notice that you look like one of the princes.
Chalker: I think that some are just remembering that when I was a child and my other siblings and I played with the young princes and princesses.
Otto: That brings in another question, why were you and your siblings playing with royals. It had never been done before?
Chalker: My father had died, making my brother the Duke, and they wanted to keep an eye on him until he was old enough to take his rightful place.
Otto: At the time, there were two other deaths that left young heirs. One was a duke and the other an earl.
Chalker: The other two heirs were older. The duke’s son was sixteen and the earl’s son was twenty-two. My brother situation was unique. His mother had died a year earlier, leaving him, his brother (Kilroly), and the Duke alone. When the Duke died my mother was pregnant with me, and he had not married her. A year later, my step-father the Earl married my mother. The results of this marriage meant that an Earl was temporarily in control of his territory and control of a Duke’s territory because of my mother control of my brother (Renheard). This caused the King to monitor the situation. Otto: Yes, I know the story, but what if you were not the Duke’s son. Chalker: Why is there a question to who my father is?
Otto: Well, the rumor is that you maybe the son of one the princes, and if you are your position in the line of succession changes dramatically. If you are the crown-prince’s (Melcoro) son, you are now fifth in the line of succession. If you are the son of one of the other two princes (Krugure and Hermes), you are no less than eighth in the line succession.
Chalker: Well, that is a good tale, but it is not true, and I have to go. It was good talking to you Otto.
