Track 1 – Fairplay Bank Robberies (08/13/1994 - 09/10/1994)

GM: JohnS

Write-up: MaryK

[Session 08/13/94]

On Wednesday, August 3, Enigma approached Michael Ironbear (who was on a camping trip with Sarah Matthews) about recruiting for a mission. At first Ironbear’s response was a flat ‘no’, but as Enigma continued talking Ironbear became more intrigued.

Ironbear thought it over for a few days, then finally agreed. On Saturday, August 6, he returned by chartered jet to Hawaii. In the meantime, Enigma had gotten Josh Andrews to start recruiting for the same mission.

Fairplay Bank Robberies

A044 Track 1 Assignment

Team Roster:

  • Michael Ironbear
  • Josh Andrews
  • Jezabel Ringer
  • Brodie Cates
  • Kathy Oakbranch
  • Thomas ‘Red’ Harper
  • Harry ‘Strawberry’ Gadowsky
  • Taliaferro ‘Telly’ Diliggi

The group met at the hotel stables on Thursday, August 11. Jezabel’s sendoff committee consisted of Tamarind Shadowsoft (who is loaning his two prized horses, Stormshadow and Goldenshade, to Jezabel and Ironbear), Whisperill Smokeshadow, Roberta Vasquez, and Hell Tanner. The mission team popped out at noon.

The team was popped into an alley (without a dumpster) in a town called Jefferson in the territory that in our world will become Colorado. During their initial investigations they garnered few and fragmentary clues. The thieves were never seen entering or leaving the vaults. Guards stationed inside the vaults disappeared without a trace. Mostly gold and silver were taken, but never all of it at once. While there seemed to be no pattern to the robberies, Ironbear observed that every town hit so far fell within about a 22-mile circle centered on Frisco. Jezabel’s psychometric abilities garnered no useful information in the vault.

[Session 08/27/94]

Telly reported that Red apparently popped out. Jezabel volunteered to spend the night in the bank vault in Jefferson. The team made due preparation and passed a nervous-making night. Nothing happened.

However, the next day an exhausted rider on a winded horse came rushing into town and gasped out that the bank in Alma had been hit. Worse, the son of the president of the holding bank had been standing guard inside the vault and had disappeared. The robbers left one clue, though—a mark in some spilled gold dust. A sketch of this mark appeared to our 20th-century travelers to resemble the print of a Nike sneaker.

In two or three separate groups the team rode off toward Alma, but as twilight came on they decided to stop in Como. Based on a suggestion by the group, the bank officials prepared a trap inside the safe. Kathy cast Body of Air on Jezabel, who seeped into the vault.

In the wee hours of the morning, Jezabel suddenly found she had company. A young man appeared from nowhere in the midst of a tangle of two-by-fours; he barely had time to exclaim "Oh, sh--!" before the shotguns roared.

Ironbear examined the unfortunate thief. Among the shredded clothing he found a patch that read "Fairplay Amusement Park". Beneath one of the shelves was a stunner. Strawberry picked up on two people with flashlights running through the woods just outside of town. They reached some sort of platform and disappeared in a bright flash of light.
