It is about 7:45pm on April 20, 1993 as the group departs from the Illinois State University campus heading for the Interstate. Gilbert’s magic invokes the fog that surrounds their vehicles, and they drive up the on-ramp leading to I-776. Valerie and Vincente are in the lead car, Stephanie, Gilbert, JT, and Sevren in the middle, and Max and Rick in the third.

After a half-hour of smooth going, Gilbert announces that they’re approaching another gate/monument, between five and ten miles away. “I’m getting better at this,” he says proudly. (Sevren mutters, “It wouldn’t take a lot,” and resumes his nap.) Six miles later there’s an exit sign. That’s all it says, “Exit.” JT’s Missouri quarter confirms there’s a gate nearby. Valerie and Stephanie take the exit. Max, however, passes the exit, crosses the median, stops on the shoulder of the highway pointing south, and kills his lights. JT: “Max, you okay?” Max: “Yeah. I’m just going to watch and see if anybody’s following us.” Valerie: “And if they are?” Max: “I’m gonna follow them.” Valerie: “Okay. Happy hunting!”

The exit ramp lets on to an ill-maintained two-lane country road. JT says the gate’s off to the left. At a T-intersection a sign points to the left: Rowe – 2 miles. The night sky is clear and starry. Upon questioning by Sevren, Gilbert says the mana level is “the same as where we just came from.” “Uh-oh,” says Valerie, “we tried to get away from that.”

Headed south, a 1960 Corvette zips past Max. It must be doing 100 mph. It gives no indication that its driver has noticed Max’s car.

“Are there any quarters here?” asks Valerie. “If there aren’t, we can just leave.” Neither Vincente nor Gilbert detects any. Valerie: “Well, what do we do? Stay around and hope that changes, or hit the road and go to the next exit?” After a brief discussion, Valerie turns left. Looking both ways twice, Max carefully re-crosses the median and comes after them.

About a mile and a half later, the lights from a country store/gas station come into view. JT has Gilbert tune the radio dial to try to get information about where and when they are. JT recognizes some of the music on the AM stations (there apparently aren’t any FM stations within range) as having been written in the mid-1990s. One deejay exhorts listeners to “keep your mind off of things that go bump in the day.” (Valerie: “It’s Wolfman Jack, and he’s a real wolfman.”)

On the left side of the road, opposite from the store, is a small shed with a historic marker in front of it. A vehicle is parked on the shoulder of the road 30-40 yards beyond the shed, and a few other cars are parked in front of the store. Sevren has Stephanie slow the car so he can jump out. Valerie drives up beside the shed. Fifteen yards beyond it, in the middle of a field, stands a pup tent. Vincente indicates that they’d just crossed a mana boundary. He dons his goggles, Valerie grabs a flashlight, and they get out of the car.

As Vincente and Valerie close to within seven yards, a man exits the back of the tent and moves to stand behind the shard. The man, dressed in combat fatigues, bears an M16 at port arms; he has ammo and grenade bandoliers crossed over his chest, a gun at each hip, and the hilt of a sword rising over one shoulder. Vincente casts Missile Shield on himself.

“Good evening,” the man says as they approach. “Good evening,” Vincente returns. “Why are you armed like that? Are you guarding something?” “Yep.” “What are you guarding?” The man points at the shard lying flat on the ground. “Do you own it?” Vincente asks. “Nope.” “Then why are you guarding it, if you don’t own it?” Valerie walks up and looks down. The stone is 5’ x 4’. Depicted is a profile of George Washington and the words: Delaware – First to Adopt will be the Last to Desert the Constitution – 1849. [Bill: “Delaware! It’s actual size!”] Vincente continues, “Are you being paid to guard it?” “No, this is something I gotta do right now. What do y’all want with it?” “Since you don’t own it, you can’t stop us from doing anything with it.” “Yes I can, if I have to.” “Well, why would you?” “Because it can bring nasty things into this dimension, and I don’t need any more of those here. We’ve got more than we need.”

Valerie starts dancing on the shard, trying to get the two-places-at-once sensation she felt back in Sherman. The rush flows over her. She seems to be able to see a series of shards trailing away to the south, including the Ohio stone in Normal, the Pennsylvania stone in Sherman, and a Kentucky stone beyond that. She also senses the Corvette tearing along I-776, roaring past Normal. Two people are inside the car. Eventually she senses at least one other shard up the road and something much larger beyond that, toward Chicago.

Vincente: “What nasty things?” “All kinds of them.” “Two legged, four legged, eight legged? Big head, three heads, four heads?” The man cocks his head. “Yeah, that sounds about right. All of the above.” Vincente checks the man’s Aura: He is not a mage, but he possesses a number of unusual attributes – metahuman abilities. There’s a magic item beneath his fatigues. Indicating Valerie, the man asks, “What is your friend doing?” “Dancing,” Vincente replies; “She likes standing on those things.” “She’s not going to try to bring anything through, is she?” “I don’t think she can, in this dimension.” Sevren, weapon drawn, stealthily closes to within three yards of the man.

“So you are travelers?” “We came in a car.” “Or two,” adds JT, as he hobbles up, extending a hand. “Dr. G. T. Trust. Nice to meet you.” “Nice to meet you,” returns the man, shaking JT’s hand. JT: “So what kinds of creatures have come through?” The man describes a sampling, then adds “Actually, only two or three minor ones have come through this place. But we can’t take a chance, so I got the assignment to plug it.” JT: “You said you’ve got enough of them here already. What’s that mean?” “You might want to move on down the road. We’ve got a major Cthulhu incursion.” Vincente: “Are you a demon hunter, or fighter?” “Amongst many other things. I drew the short straw for this one. It’s been boring, mostly.”

Vincente: “Have you seen any Nazis?” “No,” the man says cautiously. JT: “Or an archmage named Rhodes? White-haired guy?” “Nope. Other than the locals, you’re the first people I’ve seen in two days. I’ve been here for about seven. I’m hoping she’ll send me some relief and someone will spell me soon.” Vincente: “What organization are you with? It seems you’re not alone. And you must be an awful powerful group to have just one guy here in case the Big Guy comes through.” “This is a minor breach.” JT: “Don’t bet on it.” “Uh-oh. What do you know about this that I should know?” JT: “We’re trying to tell you. Nazis, archmages…”

Vincente: “Are you a time cop or something?” “No, I’m strictly local. Grew up on the Kentucky-Illinois border.” Vincente: “Are you with the police, or a militia, or what?” “Since the Cthulhu incursion, a little of all of that. Before, I guess I was officially law enforcement.” Vincente: “Has it been that long ago?” “It seems like forever. At least we pushed them out of this part of the country. California’s still in bad shape. And I think they’ve got a big foothold around Mexico City. We may have to get together and try to take care of that.”

Vincente: “Where’s the nearest town?” “What’s left of Chicago. Or I guess Joliet’s not too far away. Before the wars they had 100,000 people. I don’t know how many there are now. Chicago took it pretty bad in the first days.” Vincente: “The war with the demons?” “Yeah. You probably don’t want to stick around.” JT: “How’d you push ‘em back? Nukes?” “A lot of blood and death. No nukes, however.”

Vincente to JT: “Oh, I forgot to tell you. Besides the little magic thing on his chest, he has meta-powers.” JT: “Really?” The man says, “Yeah. I sort of belong to a group that operates out of Center City. How are y’all related to this gate? You seem to know a little bit about it.” Vincente: “How long has this gate been here?” “Our mage said three weeks.” Vincente: “So this gate was not the reason for the initial incursion, right?” “Oh, that happened two years ago now.” Vincente: “We’re looking for people who are following the gate.” “Okay. I haven’t seen anyone like you described. When I first got here, I saw something trying to come through, but it turned to dust after I killed it.”

The man adds, “Your friend behind me – he’s pretty quiet.” JT: “*Our* friend?” The man smiles. “You can come on in.” Sevren: “I’ll stay here.”

The man says, “If anybody like you described comes through here, do you want me to prevent their passage? But you didn’t come out of the gate.” JT: “We came off the road.” “What road?” Vincente: “The road that connects the gates.” JT: “Come here.” The man lets his M16 fall to slung position and steps forward. JT directs him to stand on the shard (beside Valerie, who’s still dancing) and touches him on the arm with his hand that’s holding the Missouri quarter. “Whoa,” the man exclaims. JT: “That road.” Valerie gestures back along the way and says, “Roadmarks.” “This is bigger than we thought. I don’t think she knows.” JT: “We’re trying to get these shards put back somewhere, because they’re a danger.” “You’re trying to seal the breach?” JT: “We’d like to get things closed up so they don’t create a danger throughout the continuum. By the way, who is this ‘she’ you keep talking about?” “Via’s been acting as the dispatcher, but the mage is Tempest. I need to report to them what you just showed me. I don’t think she knows that it’s a bigger gate than it appears. It’s linked into this road you’re showing me?” JT: “That’s how we found you. We sensed this, and took the exit off the road. We have a gatemaster with us.” Vincente: “And a demon hunter.” JT: “Well, we’re all kind of demon hunters.” Vincente: “But that’s her profession.” Hearing herself mentioned, Stephanie starts walking toward the group. Max follows her.

The man steps off the stone. Vincente: “What year is this?” “1999. April 20th.” JT, holding out a quarter: “Have you seen or heard of any of these?” “No, I haven’t. It’s an interesting quarter.” Valerie, who has stopped dancing but is still standing on the shard: “Hey, what’s your name, sir?” “My name? Ed Allen.” JT: “That’s kind of mundane, to be connected with ‘Via’ and ‘Tempest’.” Ed: “Okay. My code name’s Bohica.”

Vincente steps onto the shard. Valerie: “Hey, Vincente, look that way. Do you see? I see another shard and I see something big.” Vincente senses the power, but can’t differentiate it. JT gives in to his curiosity and sets one foot on the shard. Ed steps back and tries to move toward Sevren, who says “No, you stay right where you are.” Ed smiles; “I think I could like you.” JT senses a large shard some sixty miles away, then something really big about fifty miles beyond that, on the lake in Chicago. He also senses the fast Corvette approaching Sherman.

Vincente casts Seeker on Rhodes. “I finally got a hit on Rhodes. He’s still in Normal.” Valerie: “How come you can sense him from here and you couldn’t sense him there?” Vincente: “It wasn’t that I wasn’t sensing him. He was blocking, so I couldn’t find him. I did the spell very well this time.”

Max: “He said things are coming out of it. Do you think you should be dancing on it?” Valerie: “I didn’t see anybody! It’s empty from hither to yon.” Max: “You hope.” Valerie: “I *know*.”

Max to Ed: “You can have your guy come out of the woods out there.” Ed: “I wish I had another guy.” JT: “Why? We’re not going to do anything to you.” Ed: “No, I mean for what I’ve been doing. My gut tells me y’all are okay.”

Valerie asks Gilbert, “Couldn’t you fix this so nothing else comes through, so Mr. Allen can go back to his real job?” Gilbert: “I’m willing to try if you want me to.” He has everyone move off of the stone, then spends a few minutes studying it. When Gilbert announces he’s ready, JT places his hand on Gilbert’s shoulder (his other hand clutching the Missouri quarter), and Valerie puts her hand on a different part of his anatomy. Gilbert begins singing a song about gates and closure. The Delaware shard glows blindingly for twenty seconds, then Gilbert collapses, bleeding from his nose, and the shard fades. Vincente determines that the gate is not closed, but shrouded.

Ed says, “Well, thanks for your help.” Vincente: “Hopefully you’ll have a boring time.” Ed: “If I tell them the gate’s been shrouded, maybe I can get someone to relieve me.” Valerie: “Do you want to come with us? See how the road works?” Ed: “I’m afraid I have too much to do here. Thanks for the offer, though.” Vincente: “Are y’all winning?” Ed: “Barely. But we *are* winning. We’ve been able to keep the Great Old Ones from coming through.”

Vincente: “Is the store open?” In response, Ed reaches into a pocket and tosses him the key, which Vincente hands to Sevren, who wants to get food and drink (“Leave some money”). Max follows Sevren into the store and picks up some batteries for his cattle prod. Sevren places the key and his signature black crane in the cashbox.

The group takes their leave of Ed Allen, warning him to be very cautious if the gray-haired mage shows up, as he will be very powerful here. “I’m going to call in some backup,” Ed muses. “The Nazis won’t be a problem, but an archmage could be tough to handle.” JT: “Anything you can do to slow him down won’t bother us a whole lot.”

Gilbert seems pretty well recovered as the group returns to their cars, though JT notices him casting a healing spell on himself. The mage waves away the doctor’s offer of pain medication.

Fog rises as the three cars roll along the on-ramp to I-776. Valerie sets a 60mph pace. They encounter no other traffic on the ground or in the air. Forty minutes later, JT announces “There’s a gate coming up,” and after five miles Valerie takes the exit labeled Freedom. (JT: “Well, we shouldn’t find any Nazis there.”) Soon the signage indicates that they are approaching Elwood, Illinois. It’s about 10:30pm. The fog dissipates and the stars shine brightly. Another sign reads Elwood – Population 1800. Various signs use British spelling – for instance, ‘colour’ instead of ‘color’.

They enter town on South Chicago Street. They come to a stop at an intersection where the road splits into two branches, and JT senses the shard in the park area between the branches. Vincente notes that the mana level clicks from normal to high. Sevren gets out of the car and enters the park. The others pull into a parking area just before Mississippi Street. The main flag flying at the park’s entrance is the Union Jack.

Vincente senses five more quarters in this world. Rick stays with the cars (JT: “Oh, good, he gets to deal with the police when they show up!”) while the others pile out and proceed toward the shard. The granite stone has dimensions 6’ by 6’ and bears the name Massachusetts below an ornate carving featuring the Latin inscription “Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem” (“By the sword she seeks peace under liberty”). [The carving depicts an Algonquin Indian holding a bow and arrow; the arrow is pointed downward, symbolizing peace. A star with five points appears next to the Indian’s head. Above him is a bent arm holding aloft a broadsword; the blade points upward, symbolizing that independence was won through revolution.]

The park is a memorial to those from around Elwood who have fallen in war. Among the wars listed are the Crimean War, the Ottoman War, and the Alaskan War. (No mention of World War I or II.)

Valerie hops up on the shard. She can look back over a line of shards to the “south” – and two more to the “north”. The Corvette on I-776 is well past Sherman and on its way to St. Louis. Vincente gets a Trace lock on a quarter about ¼ mile away. “Come on,” he says to Valerie, “let’s take a drive. I’m going to go get a quarter.” Sevren speaks up, “I’m gonna come with you guys.”

Following Vincente’s directions, Valerie drives west on Garner Street. Vincente indicates a particular one-story house; Valerie cruises past it and parks three or four houses down. It’s a little past 11pm (on Tuesday, April 24) and the house is dark. Vincente casts Levitate on himself, glides along the sidewalk and around to the back door. He peers through the glass and doesn’t see anyone, so he teleports into the dining room. Sevren cases the joint, then picks the back door and lets himself into the kitchen. Vincente senses the quarter toward the front of the house. He and Sevren converge on the master bedroom. The door is closed but not locked. Sevren opens the door and slips inside, Vincente right behind him. There are two people asleep in the bed. Sevren grabs a stack of quarters off of the dresser, looks through them quickly, and slides one of them into his pocket. Vincente teleports back to the car. Sevren leaves a black paper crane on the dresser before he departs, taking care to re-lock the back door.

When Sevren slides back into the car, Valerie flicks on her flashlight and says “Let’s see it.” It is the Vermont quarter, which bears the dates 1791 and 2001, the phrase “Freedom and Unity,” and a man tapping two maple trees for their sap. Behind the trees is a landmark called Camel’s Hump Mountain. The quarter has a green plant aura. “I’ll trade you,” says Sevren. “No, you can have it,” Vincente replies quickly. “He wants that Connecticut quarter,” Valerie amplifies. “The one the thief had,” adds Sevren. “Oh! Why didn’t you just ask me? Here,” Vincente says. Sevren checks the Connecticut quarter before giving over the Vermont quarter.

Valerie asks, “Okay, Vincente, where’s the next quarter?” He casts his spell, which indicates it’s two miles further east on the same road. The Trace points to a two-story house on ¾ acre near the town limits. “Want me to let you in?” Sevren asks Vincente, who replies “No, I can get in.” “All right,” shrugs Sevren. Vincente teleports into a front bedroom. A young man about 17 or 18 years old is sitting up in bed, reading by penlight. Vincente levitates over him and casts Daze. The lad’s jaw goes slack and the penlight drops from his hand; from his shorts Vincente extracts the New Hampshire quarter.

JT takes Gilbert aside. “I think this world is a lot closer to yours than it is to ours.” “I noticed the flag.” “Tell me about the flags.” Gilbert points in turn to the flag of the British Empire, of the North American Dominion, “and that, I presume, is the flag of this state.” “How many states are there in the Dominion?” Gilbert’s first answer is 26, then it occurs to him to add 9 more for Canada, and “Part of what you call northern Mexico is also in the Dominion.” “I presume there is no Washington Monument in your world.” “No, there isn’t.” “In your world, *you* would be the Washington Monument.”

The New Hampshire quarter bears an image of the rock formation called The Old Man of the Mountain [which, unfortunately, collapsed in 2003] and the motto “Live Free or Die.” (Valerie: “It’s a Great Stone Face; maybe it helps your acting ability.”) Vincente’s unable to get a ‘ping’ on the next quarter, so they head back toward the shard (and higher mana).

Valerie: “Vincente says he can’t sense the next quarter. Can Gilbert?” JT passes the question along. Gilbert: “I’m not sure I even know how.” He makes a brief attempt and quickly admits failure. “I’m tired. It’s been a long day.” JT suggests that he sleep in the car; Stephanie flashes a smile at JT and follows Gilbert.

After casting another Seeker spell, Vincente says “Let’s drive north. I’m going to try to get closer before I try a Trace.” They pass a sign: Joliet – 7 Miles. Vincente’s Trace locks on. They’re approaching a farm. There are no lights on at the farmhouse, but there are almost certainly dogs on the property. Valerie stops at the beginning of the 200-yard gravel road leading up to it. Vincente levitates and Sevren blends into the night (feeling the bonus from his Connecticut quarter).

Sevren finds the back door unlocked, and enters a screened-in mud room. Vincente teleports into an empty bedroom. They converge at the master bedroom, in which an older couple lies. Vincente senses that the quarter is in the woman’s possession. Moreover, her body language indicates she’s awake. Vincente casts a Stun spell. “That felt funny,” the woman says, sitting up and staring straight at him. “What’s a nice young man like you breaking into my place for?” She nudges her husband. Sevren readies his gun. “What can I do for you?” the woman asks. Vincente casts Daze and the woman says, “That’s not very nice.” Vincente casts Levitate on the woman. Suddenly the air in the room swirls violently, striking toward Vincente. He Blinks out of the room and the wind slams into the wall. Vincente flips the woman face-down, and now Sevren can see that her left fist is clenched. The woman begins to glow, the light growing rapidly brighter. Sevren takes three steps and grapples the woman. Vincente raises her up out of bed, feeling the increased weight. Now the man wakes up. Sevren twists the woman’s arm; with a cry of pain she releases the quarter (and the light goes out) and he catches it. The man swings his fist and strikes Sevren in the face, but his mask protects him. Vincente steps to where he can see into the room. Sevren extricates himself from the tangle on the bed, and he and Vincente flee the farmhouse.

Valerie: “Are you guys in trouble? I hear a lot of heavy breathing.” Sevren: “Vincente’s a little out of shape.” Vincente: “Sevren had to beat up an old woman.” Sevren: “At least one of us succeeded.” Vincente teleports himself and Sevren back to the car. As Valerie drives away, the three of them hear three shotgun blasts. Sevren hands the Maine quarter (bearing the dates 1820 and 2003 and depicting the Pemaquid Point Light and a three-masted schooner) to Vincente. Vincente casts Seeker and it doesn’t connect, so he suggests they return to the shard.

It’s around midnight when they reach the park. Vincente casts Seeker and knows he did so very well, but he still doesn’t detect another quarter. Then it occurs to him that due to the spell’s limitations, it can only be cast once per day per item.

Sevren picks up a Chicago newspaper dated April 24, 1984. Then something occurs to him, and he says he needs to go back to the farmhouse. “There’s something I forgot to do.” Valerie guesses correctly that he didn’t leave his trademark paper crane, and offers to drive him back out to the farm. Unlike before, the farmhouse is all lit up, so Sevren leaves his crane in the mailbox (after writing the message “Sorry for the inconvenience” on it).

Over the headsets Valerie informs the rest of the group that they won’t be finding any more quarters tonight, so they should find a hotel or motel. There aren’t any such in Elwood, so the group drives to Joliet. As they pull into the parking lot of a King George’s Inn, Vincente raises the question “Won’t we need money?” After hearing a quick explanation of the quandary, Stephanie offers the 400 pounds in Dominion cash that’s in her purse, and Gilbert adds 50 more. Max goes in to deal with the night clerk; the cash is close enough that it passes.

They settle into their rooms. Most of them prepare for sleep right away; a few catch up on the local news first. As suspected, the British Empire is a major power, consisting of Great Britain, Dominion of North America (capital: Philadelphia), Dominion of India, and Dominion of Australia. Its main rivals are the German Empire, Russian Empire, Kingdom of Italy, Arab League, Japan, and China. France gained its independence from Italy less than fifty years ago. The Russians, Germans, and British are engaged in a Cold War.

April 25, 1984: Rick gets up at 9:00am. He knocks at the door of the room where Gilbert, Stephanie, and Sevren are staying, and asks Sevren for money to buy breakfast. Stephanie’s still asleep, so Sevren picks through her purse and hands Rick a wad of cash. Rick pushes some of the cash under the others’ room doors.

Gilbert tells JT that this British Empire is better organized and has better control over its dominions than the one he comes from. JT reasons that the Nazis would be pretty much unable to cause problems here.

Sevren asks directions of the desk clerk to a second-hand clothing store and walks there. He sells a couple of outfits for 30 pounds. He goes to another store and buys a pair of pants.

At JT’s prompting, Vincente checks the number of quarters in this world. He detects “a large number” in Elwood, but he can’t tell how many. JT: “We need to get back down there and find those other two that are loose.”

Sevren explains he’s taking a cab to a coin shop, reasoning that someone who had found one of the quarters might take the unusual find there to be examined. Vincente retorts that so far everyone who has found a quarter has felt a strong attraction and kept the coin to themselves. After listening to Sevren’s description of the quarter, the shopkeeper (chuckling at the idea of a “United States of America”) tells Sevren “I’m sure if anything like that had come through here, I’d have seen it.”

At noon the group proceeds back down to Elwood. Sevren borrows Vincente’s goggles and inserts the earpiece to see if he can pick up any Nazi transmissions.

At this point, with almost two hours left in the session, the recording ends.

Vincente traced another quarter to the Elwood police station. Valerie, Vincente, and Sevren drove to the small building. Vincente cast Foolishness on the desk sergeant as he asked her about a missing person named Vanessa Vaughn. Sevren approached and started asking questions as well, and the sergeant became quite flustered. Vincente suggested they be allowed into the cellblock to see if ‘Vanessa’ had been locked up for public drunkenness or some such. Eventually the desk sergeant called over her shoulder for Enoch to come to the front.

The three slipped past the desk sergeant to the door behind her. From the other side of the door Vincente could sense the quarter approaching at about waist level. Then there was a thud and the quarter dropped to near floor level. Vincente quickly pushed open the door. A uniformed policeman lay sprawled in the hallway; standing over him was the Nazi, Durr. Durr tried to flee, but Valerie and Vincente quickly tackled him. In the struggle Durr dropped the Massachusetts quarter he'd just taken from the policeman, and Valerie caught it.

With a great effort Vincente teleported himself, Valerie, and Durr to the shard in the park where JT, Max, Stephanie, and Gilbert were waiting. Durr continued to fight desperately, but finally collapsed. JT flashed his badge, which kept curious civilians away as the group carried Durr to their car. JT attempted first aid, but Durr was dead. Fifteen quarters were retrieved from Durr’s body. Valerie picked up Pennsylvania, Alaska, California, Idaho, Nevada, and South Carolina; Vincente garnered Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, Sevren had run to the back of the police station to cut off Durr’s escape when he noticed an idling car in the rear parking lot. At the wheel was a man he recognized as one of the Nazis he’d seen in Normal. Sevren approached the car at full speed while arming one of the odd flash grenades he’d taken from the Nazi agent he and Vincente had fought on the roof in Sherman. His attempt to throw the grenade into the car barely missed, but this alerted the driver to his presence. As the Nazi threw the car into gear, Sevren launched himself through the open passenger-side window, slamming the driver’s head against the door frame and knocking him out. Sevren then noticed a second Nazi, wounded and unconscious, lying in the back seat. He ziptied both Nazis and drove their car around to the front of the police station, where he transferred them to the group’s car.
