Note: The cast returned from their previous shoot, which had lasted a subjective ten days, to find that the date at the ranch had been advanced two years, to September 1, 2014.
On Friday the 5th the director calls in Vincente and Valerie and orders a vignette that he calls "Escort and Delivery." Anne Daniels is a twelve-year-old girl who has lived in ten different foster homes since she was two. She was "born exactly on the solstice" and is "destined to be the chief protector of that reality" when she turns 18. She lives with her current fosters, Kane and Holly (Decker) Hodge, both retired law enforcement officers, at 1112 Meandering Way in Kansas City. Anne must be transported to her new caregivers at the Gateway Arch in St Louis before sundown. The Hodges cannot take her, nor can the new caregivers come get her, because "it would be disastrous," as would a late arrival.
The director flips Vincente a coin that looks like a silver dollar. On one side is an eagle and the other a starburst. It is a token of The Way of the Golden Eagle, "the protectors of that reality." He slides Vincente some photos or Anne (petite, pretty, dark red hair).
Vincente and Valerie take the Navigator and the hypercycle and drive through a portal to Kansas City. Somehow they miss the turn onto Meandering Way and have to double back a couple of times. Vincente notes that the street sign is magic. Valerie waits by the Navigator as Vincente rings the doorbell. Holly Hodge answers, and Vincente checks her aura: Magery 1, very strong will, very self-assured, tries to do the right thing. He says "My name is Vincente Carbone" and hands her the coin. She twirls it in her fingers, then inserts it into some device and presses a button. "Oh, very good, I was expecting you. I don't know how we were compromised, but we must get out of here by sundown." She hands Vincente back the coin and the device. Vincente: "Will I need this?" "I need you to take it." From the device Vincente feels a probe "looking for ill intent." He hands it back.
Holly allows Vincente indoors. (He subvocalizes, "Valerie, if this cuts out, you come in.") Anne is playing chess with Kane; she's winning. Vincente extends his hand and she grips it a little apprehensively. Her aura is "a mess," "in flux," "swirling," "emotional turmoil." She has psionic and magery potential. He says reassuringly, "This is going to be fun! Are you ready? You can call me Vincente. Do you know any spells?" "A few." "Let's get your stuff and get out of here." She is bringing two bags and a backpack, and Vincente asks, "Can you get to your weapons?" Anne is surprised that he knows about them (a .22 target pistol and a 'princess dagger'). Kane explains that the dagger "enhances her abilities" and its damage is multiplied.
Vincente sends Anne outside to meet Valerie while he addresses Holly and Kane. "Okay, you two. We weren't the first team. The other didn't make it. I figure a third team will come, and they will have a legit coin --" "-- from the first team," Holly realizes. Vincente: "I hope this info helps you stay alive. And I am not related to the Chicago Carbones."
