Departing the village of Grassmont late in the day, the group traveled along the road for only about seven miles before camping. Well after dark during Runis' watch, a portal suddenly opened. Out stumbled a badly-injured human pursued by a snakelike humanoid (kaa) and a bale, the portal closing behind them. After a brief but intense fight, the bale and kaa were dead. Rory tended the now-unconscious human's wounds.

By morning the human had pretty well recovered. He spoke to Runis, saying he had been looking for the dwarf. The man gave his name, Juan Rodriguez, and asked for help rescuing his friends Johnny and Sandra from a fortress "three realities away and ten miles north."
