Paula has made the decision to have Enigma take her and the twins offworld where they can be protected. She has made arrangements with Enigma, and transport is scheduled for early January. She hosts Thanksgiving at her house.

Kef is staying in Terrell. Every day she spends several hours in the hospital, trying to bring Steve out of his coma. She spends every night in research, studying everything from neuropsychology to deep meditation. From her research she synthesizes a promising technique, which she decides will have an increased chance of effectiveness if performed at the winter solistice.

Kef goes to Steve's hospital room and begins the process. She gradually makes contact with "Steve," but while he seems to recognize her, this is a personality radically different from the Steve she knew. Steve is excited about a place he calls "Perth" and repeatedly insists that "this is where I need to be." He pleads with Kef to reunite him with his body. Initially uncertain of whether this is even possible, Kef improvises a technique that physically transfers Steve's body to Perth and infuses it with Steve's animus. She watches as Steve strides out of a shadowed alley into the sunlit city of Perth.

Meanwhile, hospital personnel alarmed by certain manifestations alerted Axle, who contacted Blake.
