On Monday, May 15, Richard Cheshire is in Montreal having just finished getting dressed when Enigma appears. They chat amiably over breakfast. Then Enigma asks Richard to go on a mission "that may be suited for your particular talents." The mission is to go to 17th-century France and make sure a young scientist-mathematician makes it safely from Paris back to his home in London. The scientist's name is Isaac Newton. Richard's perfectly willing to take care of the matter immediately, but Enigma suggests he recruit a few other people to go with him.
Richard hies himself over to the pier where Fion McCullough's boat is moored and bangs on the cabin door. They have a polite, gentlemanly discussion on an assortment of topics.
Tuesday Richard says aloud "Enigma, I want to go to Hawaii," clicks his heels three times, and poof! he's in Hawaii, just as Enigma promised.
Richard finds Steve Williams in the hotel lobby, playing his guitar and singing softly. He buys him a drink (ginger ale for Steve, champagne for himself) and outlines the mission. Steve seems inclined to go, but he's involved in training and lessons that (as it turns out later) would be too inconvenient to put on hold. (Steve contacts Richard on Wednesday and declines the mission, but does give him a copy of a biography of Sir Isaac Newton.)
As he and Steve take leave of each other, Richard sees Josh Andrews crossing the lobby. Richard has no particular liking for Andrews (who, during a previous mission, tried to interfere in a duel between Kev McGuire and Richard by pointing a gun at each of their heads and threatening to blow their heads off. Richard called Andrews' bluff, shouting at him to go ahead and shoot. Since then, Andrews has vowed never again to bluff with a gun), but stops to speak with him. Andrews voices his restless urge to go out on another mission. He's been brooding over his last mission, from which he returned in mid-March, where Mickey Frazier accidentally shot and killed Jocelyn Morgan; he says that had he been in Frazier's position, he would be the one with Jocelyn's death on his conscience. Andrews wants to go out and prove he hasn't lost his nerve.
Richard also recruits Sir Byron, Buster (who Richard figures can pass as an exotic animal), and Brodie Cates (who was training in Japan).
The group meets at the hotel stables around noon Saturday. Enigma has altered their horses' tack to be more period-looking, and provides period clothing, weapons (that look like black powder pistols, but actually take two .45 shells), and coinage for those who want it. There's even a miniature musketeer's uniform for Buster, complete with a sword and a brace of pistols.

While questioning the Gold Key Tavern's proprietress, Richard coaxes Leslie Montague into admitting the reason she had hired men to kill Isaac Newton. A man she says she cannot name kidnapped her young daughter six weeks ago, and is demanding Newton's death in exchange for her little girl's safety. Leslie does not know where the man is located; her only communication with him has been through the courier, who shows up about once a week.

Fion McCullough elected to resign from IS and retire to this world. He gave Richard his ship, the Dublin Lass, asking that he take good care of her.
A few months later, the Dublin Lass appears in a harbor near where Fion is staying, along with two cases of Pinch and a note from Richard that the Lass had been pinin' for Fion and he was the only right master for her.
