Shawna had the metal pieces that were found in Baroness Giles' home (the same metal found in the Baroness' amulet and Yasser's ring) analyzed by an elven metallurgist. In its pure form it is brittle and difficult to work, with a very high melting point. The metallurgist could find no modern record of this metal, only ancient tales of a "dark twin of mithril." Shawna consults with her friend Lady Thire, who directs her to a library book, Legends and Myths of the Golden Age. The "dark twin of mithril"," according to legend, was discovered on the Isle of Mistral, a currently uninhabited southern island.
Chalker visited the Temple of Cor to find out more about the icons. He is told that the eagle was made by men consumed with greed and power; it is a doorway; it and the other icons "need to be gathered and dealt with."
Branamin has been busy with rune and spell research. Sometimes he hears a bell reverberating in his head. He pays for a history of the blue bell.
Branamin, Chalker, and Shawna are attacked in an alleyway by a man with two swords, a Winged One with three javelins, and some assorted thugs. Branamin's Sunbolt is so powerful, the Winged One's eyes burst. Branamin casts Glue to stop the first two thugs' advance, and the other thugs flee. The swordsman strikes Chalker hard in the chest, but the blow is almost entirely absorbed by Chalker's armor. In turn, Chalker stabs the swordsman through the heart, killing him instantly. Among the swordsman's effects is a written note: See if you can buy them. If not, take them. -- K. He wears a signet ring from a noble house in Lesmallin, a 2-pt powerstone embedded in the band.
Chalker and Branamin are allowed to interrogate Baroness Sylan Giles. She is shackled and under constant guard, and is described by the warden as "unexpectedly dangerous."
