B046 Track 2 Assignment

MISSION TEAM

  • Reg Myers
  • Jason Rathbone
  • Dr. Vincent Emery
  • John Whitetop
  • Sly
  • Bellassica Ringer
  • Beano Luca
  • Pierre LeBec
  • Samantha Dancer

Reg Myers is recruiting for a mission that involves averting a war between two sides, the Federation and the Kronin.

[07/14/94]

Dr. Emery popped out with the rest of the group, but wound up someplace else. He found himself preparing for surgery at a field hospital who-knew-where.

Pierre was AWOL, too. Beano was worried. After all, without his living shield, Beano might get hurt!

[07/21/94]

Everyone was in the conference room. Reg Myers, who had seated himself at the head of the table, suddenly popped out, and Pierre popped in in Reg’s place. Just as suddenly, a blaster appeared in Sly’s left hand, leveled at Pierre; once Sly recognized who it was, the blaster vanished. A few seconds later, Reg reappeared in the middle of the table, retching. Sly’s blaster also reappeared, and this time she didn’t bother putting it away. It was explained to the Captain and Lt. Cmdr. Louis Wu that their organization’s teleportation device was still being tested.

The Federation officers said that humans and Kronin had been in conflict ever since they discovered each other. The Kronin have recently increased their raids on a particular shipping lane; they had stolen various cargoes, and in several cases, entire ships (in particular, those with newer engines). Sly remained silent at her self-selected post by the door, but her brain churned out questions that nobody was asking: What kinds of cargoes were being hijacked? Was there any correlation among the ships that were attacked? Could the raids be a diversion to draw Fed attention away from the Kronin’s real plan?

The Captain and the other Fed personnel, except for Louis Wu, left the room, and one of the captured Kronin was awakened for interrogation. The Kronin’s eyes opened wide and scanned the room.

Sly heard a double thump from outside as the two corridor guards collapsed. Later speculation was that a powerful Kronin psi had mind-linked with the captive; if so, such a one would have to be at least 100 times more psionically powerful than the average Kronin. Sly searched the corridor, nearby rooms, and the conference room, but found nothing.

A couple of party members (Samantha and Bellassica) felt the ship being slightly jarred by an impact. The group soon figured out that a Kronin shuttle had attached itself to the ship. Sly, Samantha, and Beano rushed to don vacc suits and go outside. Most of the fighting took place inside. Samantha shot the shuttle pilot and reversed the attempt to overload the engines, and Sly managed to stop another Kronin before very many of the computer files had been destroyed.

Sly learned from the computer records that a dozen Kronin had been secretly dropped on Earth three days ago in coordinates corresponding to west Texas. Reg knows that the ancestral home of the Wu family is in eastern Texas. Perhaps this is yet another attempt by the Kronin to destroy the Wu family and/or the special psi-enhancing stone first found by Sairy Wu and now in Louis Wu’s possession.

[07/28/94]

Back in the conference room again, the captain finally agreed to make best speed towards Earth.

Sly revealed some factoids she had gleaned from the Kronin computer. The commando squad, numbering twelve Kronin, had connections in high places in Earth’s government. They were working with a faction called Earth Liberation, which sought to get Earth out from under the rule of the Chinese. They had used a newly-invented cloaking device on their shuttle, which was how they had managed to evade the Fed ship’s sensors earlier. Only two of their shuttles were equipped with the device, which drained enormous amounts of power and was only useful if the ship was traveling at under 200 mph.

Reg had done some research himself. The Kronin commando team had come in on a ship which was let through by the Port Authority as a trader. Reg figured that the inspector, a man named Furrier, was part of the Earth Liberation movement.

Sly, with Whitetop helping her, carried the cloaking device and the computer parts she had cannibalized from the Kronin shuttle and went down to the Engineering lab to work. Sly immediately drew the attention of the Fed ship’s chief engineer, Andrea Bass. The latter hovered around as Sly gradually figured out how the cloaking device functioned, how to install it on a ship, and how to i-face it with ship’s sensors to detect a cloaked ship. All this took several hours, during which time Whitetop brought some items out of his black hole and offered these ‘antiques’ in trade for biochips (photoreceptor amps, infrared/ultraviolet detectors, reflex boosters, etc.).

When the ship made the wormhole jump, Whitetop and Samantha suffered extreme nausea. Sly wondered out loud if these Feds had never heard of Dramamine (or at least a suppressor chip attached to the vagus nerve).

Andrea helped Sly install the device on an armed shuttle, then commenced running various tests.

Furrier shuttled over and boarded the Fed ship for his inspection. He and the two men accompanying him were quickly incapacitated.

Bellassica, in plain sight of several of her companions, pulled Louis Wu aside and whispered something to him. Wu said aloud that he thought she should share that information with the whole group. (Reg seethed inside. Two of the reasons he had recruited Bellassica were to let her show what she could do, and to gain the trust of her companions. It sure didn’t look like she was attempting to build any bridges.)

[08/04/94]

Just as Bellassica starts to speak, she pops out... adding still more fuel to Reg’s frustration. ...

[08/11/94]

Bellassica is escorted into the library. Reg reads her the riot act about withholding information from her own party.

Sly decides on her own course of action. She hies herself back to the shuttle where Samantha and Rathbone are having breakfast. Whitetop hustles aboard just before liftoff. He points out to Samantha on the map display the ravine where she should drop them off.

Whitetop and Sly work their way along opposite sides of the ravine. Sly spots the first outpost; the guard is Kronin.

...

Whitetop requests the Wu limo to make a couple of low passes over the compound. This, he hopes, will spoof the heat and motion sensors. Under cover of the diversion, he and Sly get over the fence. Over the headsets they hear Reg giving instructions not to interfere with his inspectors, then they each pick a promising-looking building and enter.

Sly hits the jackpot. Alaree, the Irari physicist, comes out of a laboratory complaining about the distraction. Sly stuns him, catches him before he falls, and slings him over her shoulder. As she trots back up the hallway, one of the guards has the temerity to approach her....

[08/18/94]

In answer to the guard’s question, Sly deadpanned that Alaree was under arrest for treason, and that interfering with her would get the guard up under treason charges. The guard insisted on seeing her ID, so she aimed a kick to his jaw and dropped him like the proverbial sack of potatoes. Grabbing him by the collar, she dragged him along up the corridor.

Kicking open the door, Sly stepped outside. About 85 yards away, a gatling laser emplacement was rising out of the ground. Sly almost grinned. She left the guard sleeping by the door and hotfooted it over to the laser, outrunning the hapless fellow who was supposed to be manning it.

...

[Sly shoots down a spaceship with a heavy blaster rifle. Film at eleven.]
