A045 Track 2 Assignment

MISSION TEAM

  • Jezabel Ringer
  • Bellassica Ringer
  • John Whitetop
  • Reg Myers
  • Torimar 312
  • Mickey Frazier
  • Kev McGuire
  • Steve Williams
  • Craig Nelson

On Saturday, June 4th, during Tam’s party, Enigma approaches Bellassica and Jezabel. He tells them that he wants them to recruit for a mission to investigate a temporal anomaly. It’s like a rip in time that is allowing ‘things’ that don’t belong to get through. The setting is Earth, circa 1954. Technology works; mana is low. He advises cold-weather gear. He tells them specifically to try to recruit John Whitetop. They are to depart at noon on Thursday, June 9th.

Monday morning the twins go out to Milo’s Mansion. They meet Whitetop, tell him about the mission, and ask for advice as to who else to try to recruit. He names Craig Nelson as a possibility, and Jezabel phones the Dead Horse Saloon. Craig mistakes her for an applicant for a job as a dancer (he needs a brunette to go with the blonde and the redhead), and says she can audition at 2:30pm. Whitetop suggests it would be a good idea to take a mage, even though Enigma said there wouldn’t be any particular advantage in having one along. Jezabel drives her black Jaguar and Bellassica sits in Whitetop’s lap, and they drive to the Wizards’ Inn.

There Jezabel talks to the eleven (sic!) mage Trelane, while Bellassica converses in sign language with the cleric Torimar 312. They both say they’ll consider it. The twins ask Jarret, but he says that with Rii gone he must stay and take care of the Inn. Trelane asks J how old she is, saying she reminds him of Bela Rare.

J, B, and Whitetop go back to the hotel (this time B drives while J sits in Whitetop’s lap) and peruse the locator board. J leaves messages for Reg Myers, Kev McGuire, and Beano Luca. She contacts Joseph Schwepps, who comes downstairs for a brief discussion.

J, B, and Whitetop (J driving) drive out to the Dead Horse. The eponymous remains are hanging upside down, headless. Craig Nelson is slouched at his bar nursing a beer. His bleary eyes open wide with interest as B and J come sashaying in. B goes to the jukebox to select some appropriate music while J gets up on the small stage and begins to dance, pulling Whitetop along with her. Craig gets excited and makes increasing offers to the twins to come work for him. Whitetop slips out the door, and the twins and Craig go upstairs to negotiate.

Some time later the twins return to the hotel (after having to call on some help to remove the dead horse from J’s car). Their phone is ringing. They wind up talking with Reg, Beano, Kev, and someone named Mickey Frazier whom they’ve never even met. He won’t tell them how he found out about their mission, and refuses to leave his room for the time being (implying that he’s in some sort of trouble). B also thinks that he’s not alone in his room.

B talks J into going for a swim. Waiting for them when they return to their room are two bouquets of flowers and two modified motorcycle helmets, with a card from Craig. (Gee, nobody’s ever sent them flowers before.) Then Craig calls up and wants to know each of their favorite colors; J tells him they don’t have any (but not mentioning that the twins are colorblind). He mutters something about getting "one silver and one gold" and hangs up.

[Session Date: 06/16/94]

On the evening of Wednesday, June 8th, Jezabel called Mickey Frazier’s room. He’d already agreed to go on the mission, but she and Bellassica still hadn’t actually met him. Frazier said he wasn’t doing anything in particular and invited her to come on up to his room. Frazier is Australian, about 6’1", blue-eyed, tanned.

The party assembled in the hotel lobby at noon on Thursday, June 9th.

They popped into a barn. The stalls were unoccupied, and the temperature was very chilly. As they started to look around, from outside there came a tremendous roar. Those who peeked outside saw a tyrannosaurus rex having a cow. T.Rex noticed the adventurers and charged toward the barn. After an intense and noisy combat, the dinosaur lay dead in the snow. J and Kev set off to backtrack T.Rex... and heard another earsplitting roar.

[Session Date: 06/23/94]

Jezabel and Kev radioed to the others that there was a second T.Rex around, and continued backtracking the first one. They topped a ridge and looked down at the town of Gapton’s Cramp, Virginia, but instead of continuing east through town, T.Rex’s tracks turned south. Eventually J and Kev were joined by B and Mickey near an isolated farmhouse. There were two T.Rexes in the front yard, and an outbuilding that looked like it had exploded. As the four stood in the snow discussing what to do, a baby T.Rex came out of the woods and squeaked at them. Kev dropped it with his dazer, and J picked up the baby dinosaur and wrung its neck. Kev’s dazer turned red-hot, and he dropped it in the snow.

Meanwhile, Steve and Craig started off in a truck. About a mile from the farmhouse, they came upon the second T.Rex, worrying at a car that appeared to have people inside. Radioing to Whitetop to get ready, they got the beast’s attention and led it away. While setting up his .50cal sniper rifle, Whitetop gave Reg brief instructions on how to fire a shotgun. Whitetop put six shots into T.Rex and Reg added a shotgun blast, and the T.Rex fell and lay twitching in the snow.

Craig and Steve drove back to the car and found the two occupants, a man and a woman, dead. They stopped at a nearby farmhouse and learned that the telephones weren’t working. They went on in to town; people there were talking about the big lizard. Steve spoke to the deputy sheriff, explaining that he and his team were from Infinite Solutions and were there to take care of the problem, and would the deputy loan them his jeep? The deputy examined Craig’s Navy ID (laminated with plastic, DOB 1945) and commented that Craig was the oldest-looking nine-year-old he’d ever seen; Craig said it was a bureaucratic screw-up, and it was easier to hang on to the messed-up ID than get it corrected. The deputy was still skeptical, but allowed as to how his curiosity had been roused, and he was willing to go along with them until he found out what they were really up to. Whitetop had Craig key the deputy’s radio to see if he could get the frequency, but apparently the radio wasn’t working; in fact, Whitetop couldn’t pick up any other broadcasts besides the group’s headsets.

J, B, Kev, and Mickey suddenly heard a loud boom behind them (Kev’s dazer had exploded). Figuring that would attract the dinosaurs’ attention and they’d better get out of that area anyway, they began creeping down toward the farmhouse.

[Session Date: 06/30/94]

Jezabel instructed Bellassica and Mickey to keep low and move slowly towards the farmhouse, while she and Kev made a run for the barn 100 yards away. J and Kev stood up and began sprinting through the snow. Within moments their headsets began heating up; J quickly radioed that she and Kev would be incommunicado, pulled off her headset, and shut off the power. They still had 30 yards to go when T.Rex noticed them and began thundering after them. They dove through the hole in the side of the barn. Amazingly, T.Rex didn’t follow them, but stood just outside, bellowing.

Inside the barn was a bright purple glowing blob suspended in midair, and behind it the complicated machine that was apparently producing the glow. J’s fur was standing on end, and Kev felt an all-over tingling sensation. J and Kev investigated the machine, finding several unmarked buttons and switches (including what appeared to be the main power switch), and noting what appeared to be power leads running into a large junction box. J also spotted a grisly object — a human hand, severed jaggedly at the wrist — and set it aside. J sent to B that she didn’t want to shut the machine down because she thought the energy field was keeping T.Rex out, but in case another dinosaur began coming through, she would try shutting the power off and then quickly back on again in hopes of disrupting the transport. B informed J that Whitetop, Steve, and Craig were on their way.

Whitetop went to the first farmhouse and found no trace of Reg or Torimar, and no signs of struggle or departure. The group assumed (hoped) the two had been popped out. Whitetop retrieved his black hole and his weapons.

Whitetop, Steve, and Craig arrived and killed the two T.Rexes. Jezabel shut off the machine; the purple glow dwindled and expired with an anticlimactic pop. J and Craig picked up wrenches and started disconnecting the power leads. Whitetop removed a glass tube that looked vital to the machine’s operation.

J happened across the severed hand again. Taking a closer look, she noticed electronics sticking out of the wrist. She borrowed Whitetop’s black hole and stuck the hand in the autodoc, which informed her that the hand was an artificial construct covered with human skin... like the Terminator in the movies.

Whitetop radioed the deputy, who told him that another T.Rex (the last one, the party thought) had been sighted northeast of town. The group drove out there, found the dinosaur sleeping, and killed it. Then they went back to the barn with the machine, and Craig set up explosive charges to destroy the machine. When blowing up the machine still didn’t pop them out, Whitetop got a chainsaw and opened up a couple of T.Rex carcasses. Someone (Kev?) suggested using a metal detector instead, and when they went back to the first farmhouse, Whitetop quickly determined which T.Rex had eaten the android. Whitetop stuffed the android’s remains into a garbage bag.

The group popped back to Hawaii. Everyone appeared in the lobby except for Steve, whose ear had been injured when his headset overheated and exploded. Jezabel went around and gave each person in the group a kiss, and thanked them for helping accomplish the mission successfully.

Jezabel checked the locator board, then turned away disappointed. Bellassica went up to the JMC to visit Steve.
