Enigma selects the elven mage Trelane to recruit for a rescue mission. The team will go to an alternate Earth, January 1992, a place called Center City, Indiana. [Trelane misunderstood it as Centerville.] They are to help a woman named Deedra find a friend of hers, Talon, who has apparently been kidnapped along with an unknown number of other people.

Mana level is normal. The team will be given special equipment that will only work in this particular environment. Also, Enigma hands a piece of paper to Trelane, instructing that if they encounter a cat-lady to give her the paper.

Enigma meets with the team on Thursday, May 11th, 1995 at noon. He gives them the use of the special "ninja suits" that each glow a different color when activated. He also provides the team with special communicators (that fit almost entirely in the ear, with a fiber-thin mike). To Kristi, Tanisha, and Darr, he gives special attachments for their buckflyers, and to various team members other attachments for their weapons. Each of the spellcasters receives a ring set with a colored gemstone.

The team pops into a small park. To the south they can see the tall buildings of downtown; smoke billows into the air, and several flying figures dart about.

It doesn't take long for them to locate Deedra; she stands beside her car, peering off into the distance. At first she mildly mistrusts these strangers who address her by name. She demands to know "who sent you?" and when Trelane replies "Infinite Solutions" she decides that these people must be Team Infinity.

Deedra explains that she heard Talon cry out to her in her mind, but now she can't sense where he might be. She loans Tanisha a ring she says belonged to Talon, and Tanisha uses it to cast Seeker and then Trace. Tanisha obtains Talon's exact location; she can see him in a small cell lying on a cot, unconscious.

Led by Tanisha, the group heads off in the direction she indicates. Tanisha, Kristi, and Darr use their buckflyers; Darr tows Trelane, who is levitating and holding onto a rope; the others ride in Deedra's car.

The flyers approach a warehouse, a one-story building with a flat roof. Except for a satellite dish and some unidentified structures on the roof, the building appears fairly ordinary. Kristi recons the neighborhood; there's almost no traffic, perhaps due to the fracas downtown.

Tanisha and Trelane land on the roof; Tanisha unstraps her buckflyer and conceals it. Each mage casts Body of Air and seeps through the cracks around a hatchway. Tanisha leads the way to a door, behind which is a security room. Monitoring the consoles is a woman clad in body armor, with a katana strapped to her back and a high-powered rifle leaning against a wall nearby. The other door in the room appears to be airtight.

Torimar borrows Deedra's tire iron, smashes the frosted glass in the front door, reaches in and turns the knob, then walks inside with Jarret right behind him. Torimar sets up his fire syphon, and the two crouch down by the desk to wait. Soon front-desk help arrives in the form of a dirt golem (Clod), a couple of people in stormtrooper armor, and a blinking wizard. Torimar gets off a couple of good blasts, coating the golem with Greek fire and setting off a conflagration in the corner, barely missing the enemy wizard. Jarret quickly puts a Force Dome over himself and Torimar.

Meanwhile, Kristi and Darr create a diversion in another part of the warehouse that seems to be a helicopter pad. They get into a shooting match with several stormtroopers, none of whom can hit for beans, but some of them can dodge well, especially one guy with a jet pack.

Agrippina, having learned from Torimar the function of a fire hydrant, liberates about twenty gallons of water and forms it into a ramp leading up to the roof. Casting Body of Water on herself, she percolates into the building through the same hatchway Tanisha and Trelane had used earlier.

Jarret, murmuring something like "I'm glad Tanisha can't see me," casts Death Vision on Clod, overloading Clod's tiny brain. Torimar miscasts one of his Flame Breath spells and singes himself and Jarret. The enemy wizard casts a spell and Torimar falls asleep. Jarret causes the Force Dome to go opaque; now he can't see out, but the enemies can't see in, either.

On her third try, Tanisha finally puts the woman to sleep. She operates the security console, unlocking the doors in the cellblock, noting meanwhile that there are five prisoners in all. She hurries into the cellblock, going immediately to the last cell on the right. Talon seems to be drugged; Tanisha's Neutralize Poison spell has a very positive effect, and Talon awakens immediately.

The blinking wizard, having decided that playing with Torimar and Jarret endangered his health, pops into the security room and rouses the sleeping woman. Then the wizard stealths through the cellblock door and up the corridor. Tanisha, having awakened the prisoner across the hall from Talon -- a cat-woman -- hears the wizard's footsteps, draws her dazer, and fires blind around the corner, sweeping the hallway but apparently having no effect on the wizard. Luckily, Trelane sneaks up just as the wizard is attempting to blend with a wall and gets the drop on him.

Trelane searches the wizard and finds some nice goodies -- a powerstone ring, another ring of unknown powers, and a magic cloak. Tanisha awakens the third prisoner. Then the security woman appears in the doorway to the cellblock, raising her rifle toward Trelane, Talon, and the cat-woman. Tanisha dashes out of the cell she's in, charges the woman, and staggers her with a flying kick. The woman adroitly dodges Tanisha's karate blows, and knocks the elf back with her rifle butt. Trelane teleports behind the woman and slashes her with her own katana, then zaps her with a lightning bolt. Then Agrippina, seeping in from the corridor, casts Dehydrate and the woman drops, unconscious and barely alive.

Tanisha, Trelane, and Agrippina finish freeing the rest of the prisoners. The other three are a young man named Monty and two women, June and _______. Deedra and Talon thank the team and say they can handle things from here.

Seeing the cat-woman, Trelane remembers and hands her the message from Enigma. At first, the cat-woman (whose name is Kitty) protests that she can't read, but then she opens the message and exclaims "Oh!"

At that, the team pops back to Hawaii.
