Enigma taps Reg Myers to recruit for a mission. This will take place in America in the 1930s. They are to help some parents whose young children are being held hostage by an evil force.
Reg dines at the Wizards' Inn and presents the mission outline. Tanisha seems very interested in going, but reluctantly decides that she needs to attend to other things. A newbie named Valmont Kazor eagerly volunteers; he hails from Ethiopia, where he attended Magic University.
The team eases in heading north on a rural highway. Soon they pass a large field where a traveling carnival is set up. The date is Saturday, June 14, 1930.

Whitetop dresses in some old clothing and walks out to the carnival site. Volunteering to help out, he is put to work mucking out the animal cages.
Valmont, Pyotorovich, and Sly go to the Quinns' antiques shop. At the front counter, Sam Quinn glances up as they enter. His eyes take in the large Russian and the dark-skinned Ethiopian, but he seems to find leather-clad Sly the most anomalous of the three.

Sly and Valmont bring the little girl and her mother to the Quinns' shop. Pyotorovich remains at the doctor's office to examine the children being brought in.

Black raven-like shapes rise out of the three men. The first tries to take control of Valmont, but fails and bursts into fragments which vanish like smoke. Sly blasts one to oblivion; she hits the other but it manages to escape through the ceiling. She backtracks the three men to a truck parked next to the creek that runs behind the motel, and takes possession of the truck (which is registered to a local named Carl Perkins).
Sly, Valmont, Pyotorovich, and Braden head back to the doctor's office. Striding right past the worried parents and evil-eyed kids crowding the waiting room, Sly slings the nurse over her shoulder and starts to walk away. One of the black things comes out of the nurse and heads straight for Valmont; Sly knocks it down with a blaster shot (fortunately not hitting Valmont) and stomps on it. On a suggestion via headset from Reg, Valmont convinces the doctor to send the `possessed' children to the Quinn's shop (where Mary Poppins can help them).
Sly (with Valmont and Braden aboard) drives the truck out to the carnival, skidding to a stop near the front gate. Grabbing a bullhorn, she starts ordering people to leave the carnival. However, there seems to be something in the atmosphere which induces people to think everything's fine and there's nothing wrong.
Valmont attempts a spell to light up the area. The entire place is plunged into total darkness. Sly hears a woman crying for help, rushes off that way, and lays into some goons. Similarly Valmont hears a woman screaming and runs of in a different direction. But Reg can see that Sly's shadowboxing with nonexistent opponents while four demonic shapes inscribe a mystic circle in the ground around her.
